The new school year at the Prep began with the Learning Outside The Classroom (LOTC) programme for pupils in Years 5 to 7 and a geography field trip and orienteering day for pupils in Year 8.
Year 5 pupils camped at Poly Joke for their LOTC trip, which included a visit to Newquay Zoo to learn about endangered species, a body-boarding and surfing lesson on Fistral beach, and a talk from the RNLI about safety in the sea, flag knowledge and how to look after our coastline.
Year 6 pupils stayed at Dewerstone Cottage, where they spent time studying the locality for plant and animal species. The children tested their courage and resilience by abseiling down The Dewerstone, tackling the high ropes course, participating in a bog run and taking a leap of faith into Gold Digger’s quarry.
Year 7 pupils enjoyed two nights at Manadue Camp near Tintagel. Activities included biology lessons, art activities, camp building skills, a visit to Tintagel Castle and Widemouth Bay, and a fun-filled session on the inflatables at Retallack water park.
Year 8 pupils visited Tintagel where they carried out a tourism survey with members of the public and completed street transects. This was followed by a coastal walk to study erosion and mining, stopping at various points along the coast to Trebarwith Strand. They also visited Haldon Forest to experience orienteering and put their map work theory into practice.
