On Wednesday 26 June, the CCF Royal Navy Section embarked on their annual summer camp to HMS Raleigh where the cadets were to be based for four action-packed days of dinghy sailing.
The objective of the camp was to broaden the cadets' range of dinghy sailing experience by sailing on tidal waters at Jupiter Point, as a contrast to the relative calm of Roadford Lake. The first day was spent familiarising cadets with all of the kit and the two handed Argos and, once afloat, Lt Cdr Pearson, Mrs Bratt and the team of instructors quickly set a course to complete with basic manoeuvres and capsize drills.
Unfortunately, the wind was too strong to get afloat for much of the second and third day, so these were filled with theory lessons and a day out to Mount Edgcumbe to complete some orienteering and Adrenalin quarry. Saturday's light winds and sunshine provided perfect sailing weather, with an afternoon of racing.
All cadets gained their RYA Start Sailing qualification. Our thanks go to the three CCF RN Instructors who supported the camp: Richard Hewitt, Jeremy Hutchinson and Stuart Taylor.
