Our Pre-Prep pupils have been learning outside the classroom all week.
Year 1 and Reception pupils went to Dartmoor where they did leat dipping, letterboxing, drawing and water colour painting, as well as listening to the story of Vixana the witch and drawing her too!
They also visited the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary where they saw some beautiful butterflies, with lots of different chrysalises, and watched the otters being fed. At school they stacked stones by the river, balancing them as high as they could.
Year 2 pupils started a day with spellings in the fresh air and finding as many ‘tion’ words as they could. The trees around the grounds led to some interesting leaf identification, and they added to their nature vocabulary collection before sitting outside and writing some nature-inspired poetry. They also enjoyed hunting for sticks and stones to play noughts and crosses, before munching on a packed lunch they made themselves.
Another day was spent by the river, where Geography teacher Mr Prettejohn and A Level geographer Verity Braine inspired thinking about habitats and the journey of a river from source to sea – and taught the pupils a song about the water cycle!
After researching dragon folklore from legends, myths and stories from around the world, our Year 2 pupils went on a search for the elusive Dartmoor Dragon. Mr Thavenot (our school dragonologist) led the way to a secret spot, with lots of mysterious fallen trees, old ruins, a rushing river and hidden caves. The pupils enjoyed learning about some of the mining history of the area and used their senses to gather vocabulary for poetry. After a beautiful walk along a valley, they spotted dragon dust, a hoard of sparkling dragon treasure, and a skull that looked suspiciously like it belonged to a mystical creature!
