Supporting Military Families at Mount Kelly

At Mount Kelly, we are proud to welcome and support military families. We understand the unique challenges faced by those in the Armed Forces, and we are committed to providing a nurturing and stable environment for your children. With a strong community ethos, a focus on pastoral care, and outstanding educational opportunities, Mount Kelly offers a home away from home for military families.

Why Mount Kelly for Military Families?

  • CEA and Military Discounts: We fully support families eligible for the Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA) and have working knowledge of what is required in terms of proforma invoices and administration. Additionally, we offer generous military discounts to further assist with school fees. Our dedicated admissions team is always on hand to help you navigate the application process and explore available financial support.
  • Exceptional Boarding Experience: Our welcoming and inclusive boarding community ensures pupils experience a sense of belonging and continuity, whether they are full boarders, weekly boarders, or flexi-boarders. We foster a family atmosphere where children build lifelong friendships and memories.
Pastoral Care and Support: We prioritise the well-being of all our pupils. Our pastoral care network includes house parents, tutors, and dedicated well-being staff who understand the emotional and practical challenges faced by military families.
  • Flexible and Understanding: Frequent relocations can be challenging. We offer flexibility with termly arrangements and provide additional support during parental deployments. Regular communication and a supportive environment ensure pupils feel secure and valued.
  • Comprehensive Academic and Co-Curricular Opportunities: From academic rigour and enrichment to our world-renowned swimming programme and exceptional girls’ football academy, Mount Kelly provides opportunities for every child to thrive. Pupils can explore diverse interests through music, drama, outdoor education, and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF).
  • Exeats: From Year 9 there are no diarised exeats. In the Prep, up to Year 8, there is one exeat per half term in the calendar, but it is optional and children are able to stay at school during these weekends if required. The exeat also means a break in weekend sports fixtures so if you do wish to have a weekend away from school, parents know that these weekends are free from commitments. It also provides an opportunity for pupils to spend time with their local friends or with family without the fear of missing out on the boarding fun! We understand that every family is different so provide flexible support throughout the term.

Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

Mount Kelly is proud to offer a thriving Navy Section CCF, providing pupils with unique leadership opportunities and invaluable life skills. Through adventurous training, field exercises, and teamwork challenges, pupils build resilience, confidence, and a strong sense of camaraderie. Our CCF is closely aligned with military values, fostering discipline, leadership, and community spirit.

There are also active Army Cadet and Scouting groups in Tavistock that are options for our pupils.

Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA)

We recognise the importance of educational continuity for military children. Mount Kelly is an approved CEA school, ensuring eligible families receive substantial support towards boarding fees. Our admissions team is experienced in assisting families through the CEA application process and will be happy to provide guidance at every step.

Military Discount

In recognition of the service and dedication of Armed Forces personnel, we offer a military discount to all families with one or more serving parent. This discount applies to both boarding and day pupils, making Mount Kelly an accessible choice for military families seeking an outstanding education for their children. A non-discretionary discount of 10% for day pupils and 20% for boarders is applied to fees.

Seamless Transitions

We understand the challenges of moving schools mid-year or during key educational transitions. Our comprehensive induction programme and dedicated pastoral team ensure that every child settles quickly and confidently into life at Mount Kelly. We also provide ongoing academic and emotional support to ensure continuity in their learning journey.

Conway Merchant Navy Trust

In 2024, 13 pupils were fully sponsored by the Conway Merchant Navy Trust (CMNT) to participate in five Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award residential section. Captain Mike Reeves from the CMNT visited Mount Kelly to watch the pupils present their experiences in assembly and presented them with maritime books as a lasting memory of their trips.

We are very grateful to Captain Reeves and the CMNT for their continuing support of our pupils.
