In preparation for the GCSE /AS and A2 examination a research trip to four of the London Art Galleries was arranged
Our year 9 and 10 Mount Kelly French pupils had the incredible privilege to be chosen to pilot the new BBC Bitesize programme, before it goes on the Internet next year.
Two executives from The BBC Two Four Production came last Wednesday and tried the new resources and French Bitesize programme with our very excited language pupils, showing them 11 short films built around the different topic areas for the new GCSE, and then had a very interesting question and answer session to get their feedback.
What came out of the session was that learning languages is not just about memorising vocabulary and grammar. Lessons today are supplemented with movies, songs and Internet, which makes it more fun to learn a language.
We also came to the conclusion that the hardest part of language learning is remembering complicated grammar rules. The internet, short clips with themes young people can relate to and songs help to reinforce the rules, once you find the patterns in the spoken words and lyrics.
Mrs Brown, Mrs Bott, Mrs Morel and all the pupils felt that the content was a brilliant preparation for the forthcoming French Controlled Assessments and we will all be using the new BBC Bitesize resource as soon as it is live on the Internet.
“Merci” to Mr Hugh Walkington, for all your wonderful input and valued points of view.
The Prep was impressed with the Year 8 Assembly performance last week. Each Year 8 discussed and demonstrated particular opportunities and talents that they had identified and developed during their time at Mount Kelly – from music to sport to drama or the School Farm!
Two examples:
My Time at the School
I came when I was three,
As tall as Mrs MacDougall’s knee.
Scary at first
But what was worse
There was no one I knew I could see.
Met Jessye and Betty my first day
We played, had lunch and chatted away
Numbers and letters filled our heads
They were still there when I went to bed
Little did I know they were there to stay.
The years passed quickly I barely knew
Time didn’t stand still, it flew
The matches, the concerts, and the plays we performed
The memories are here in my heart all warm
Who knew they would stay always true.
My last year is now and I’ll take a bow
And say thank you to all who knew how
To teach me, guide me and help me along
Though time together is almost gone
I’ve had such fun. This is all for now.

The School Farm
I have been at Mount House, now Mount Kelly for 5 years. My two brothers were Mount House boys before me. This School has given me great opportunities; one of the best is the Farm. I enjoy feeding the animals in the morning and being able to keep my own animals here like this rabbit Sampson who is an orange Rex Buck. Luckily for the school I don’t bring all my animals to school as this is a list of all the animals I own: 8 rabbits, 2 ferrets 1 sheepdog, 100 sheep, 10 cows, 50 chickens, 3 ducks, 15 Quails
This School has also taught me to do the sound effects for the senior plays two years running. I am really looking forward to the last term and a half of this wonderful school and I know I will miss it hugely.

Mount Kelly Swimming took 13 swimmers to compete at the London Aquatic Centre in the ASA Zonal Championships
A sizeable dental practice was established in Lab 2 at the Prep on Wednesday morning while Dr Moore led Year 3 through the skills and knowledge needed to check a patient’s teeth, spot signs of decay from dental slides and find out how a dentist can fix problems. Pupils used surgical face masks and hand mirrors to inspect each other’s teeth and answer some simple questions. A lot of fun was had using disclosing tablets on their own teeth and examining them with mirrors. Year 3 discussed good and bad foods and when to clean your teeth. Dr Moore then showed them how to brush their teeth on the large teeth display model. Finally, a very enthused group of Year 3s left with a goody bag which included a toothbrush, toothpaste, disclosing tablets and a teeth cleaning chart.
We are very grateful for the time given by Dr and Mrs Moore for inspiring a new generation of dentists!
Mount Kelly Robotics Club (Girls Team) had been invited to lead a series of robotics demonstrations to children from one of our local primary schools.
Year Three took part in the RSBP Big Schools' Birdwatch last week, exploring the grounds of Mount Kelly Prep with their Forest School leader. Armed with binoculars and spotter sheets they identified 20 different species of birds including gold crest and a great spotted woodpecker. They were very enthusiastic about their sightings at School and have been keen to report sightings of other birds in their gardens as well.
The Mount Kelly 1st VII enjoyed a successful day at the U18 Devon Cup.
The U14’s had an impressive run at the Devon Schools Finals this week.
