Prep Science Squad Make National Top Ten

4th February 2015

Four hundred teams started the National Years 5 and 6 Science Championship 2014-15 competition, with a handful making it through to the Finals at the Diamond Light Source in Didcot. Mount Kelly were proud to be one of those that had battled through the earlier rounds to compete against the other winners from regions around the UK

Nerves aside, the team had a fantastic day and demonstrated some amazing knowledge.  Did you know that Robert Hooke was the first to name cells under a microscope (Mr Buckley didn’t) or that the oldest know star has been called Kepler 444.

Eventual winners Westminster Under School, displayed learning beyond their years, the Mount Kelly Team were not far behind finishing an amazing 7th.

Congratulations to competitors Emma Bowles, Martha Miles, Jasper Oursin, Benjamin Searle and Coach Buckley … who are already in training for next year’s competition!

The National Year 5 & 6 Science Championship 2014 – 2015

2nd February 2015

On Monday when most of our pupils will be sitting in lessons, Emma Bowles, Martha Miles, Jasper Oursin and Ben Searle will be heading up to the Diamond Light Centre in Didcot for the finals of the National Science Quiz Club Championships.

Diamond is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world, and its pioneering capabilities are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of scientific research.  I have included a picture of the facility with this email and we are sure this will prove to be a very exciting day for the teams and supporters.  Aside from the actual quiz finals, there will also be a tour of the facility and a talk/demonstration by some of the scientists working at the synchrotron.

The four earned the right to attend the Championships by beating a number of other schools from the South West and now take on the best finalists from all the independent schools across the UK including Daiglen School, Nottingham High School, Manchester Grammar School, Moorlands School, St John's College School, Danes Hill Preparatory School, Cathedral School, Llandaff and Westminster Under School.

They have not relaxed since their victory late last year and have been studying topics including The Periodic Table, Anatomy, Space and Famous Scientists.

We wish them the very best for the Championships, Good Luck
